Peyman Maadi, Leila Hatami among top 50 actors of 2010s

Iranian cineastes Payman Maadi and Leila Hatami have been selected among 50 Best Movie Performances of the 2010s in the list of IndieWire.

The cineastes won Silver Bear awards for Best Actor and Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany for their appearances in ‘A Separation’ by Asghar Farhadi.

Born in 1972, Hatami is the daughter of renowned Iranian director Ali Hatami and has appeared in a number of her father’s films, even as a child actress, including ‘Hezar Dastan’ (1987), ‘Kamal-ol-Molk’ (1984) and ‘The Devoted’ (1992).

She went to Switzerland and embarked on her studies in electrical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. Just two years later, she shifted her field of study to French Literature. Hatami returned to Iran in 1996 when her father became ill.

Her first appearance in a leading role was in the film ‘Leila’ (1997).

Hatami has starred in numerous movies and won many prestigious awards throughout her successful career.

Appearing in movies such as ‘Sheida’ (1999), ‘The Deserted Station’ (2002), ‘Season Salad’ (2005), ’40 Years Old’ (2010), ‘A Separation’ (2011) , ‘There Are Things You Don’t Know’ (2011) and ‘The Orange Suit’ (2011) scored the actress nominations of Crystal Simorgh for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Fajr International Film Festival.

In 2012, she was nominated for the Asian Film Award and People's Choice Award at the Asian Film Awards for her role in ‘A Separation’ (2011).

Leila Hatami was a member of the Jury of Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Czech Republic) in 2006.

She has won several awards, including FIPRESCI Prize at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in the US, Grand Prix – Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Silver Berlin Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Harareh Film Festival, Crystal Simorgh at the Fajr International Film Festival, Award for Best Actress of the Year at Iran's Film Critics and Writers Association Award, Best Actress award at the Montréal World Film Festival, Golden Statue at Iran Cinema Celebration, Award for Best Actress of the Year at Iran's Film Critics and Writers Association Award, and Diploma of Honor at the Fajr International Film Festival.

Born in 1972, Maadi started his film career as a screenwriter in the late 2000s. He has written screenplay for several successful Iranian movies, including ‘Swan Song’ (2000), ‘Wedding Dinner’ (2006), ‘The Snow on the Pines’ (2012) and ‘Bomb a Love Story’ (2018).

He started his acting career in Asghar Farhadi’s ‘About Elly’ (2009). Since then, he has been in a number of award-winning movies such as ‘A Separation’ (2011) which won him Best Actor in leading role from the Berlin International Film Festival.

Some other movies he has been in are ‘Tales’ (2014), ‘Melbourne’ (2014), ‘Life and a Day’ (2016), ‘Bomb a Love Story’ (2018), and ‘Suddenly Tree’ (2019).

Besides the aforementioned titles, he has been in a number of international movies such as ‘Camp X-Ray’ (2014), ‘Last Knight’ (2015), and ’13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi’ (2016).

Maadi has tried his hand at film directing and has made some titles so far, some of which are ‘The Snow on the Pines’ (2012) and ‘Bomb a Love Story’ (2018).
